International Vs. Local

According to statistics obtained from 2003/2004 review, which can be viewed at

Year 2003/04 Review (Student Data)

root of it all (under admission, Fees)

and
Local Students 72%
International Students 28%......

From what the school has written for upcoming plans for the new campus, they wanted 70% of international students and 30% locals.... why?

International student pays more fees, FOUR TO FIVE times that of a local student. ($3500 compared to $14 000!)

In 2004-2005, there was a fee hike for international students diploma year... from around $7,000 to $10,000 per year.... now it's $14,000! Although the school increases the school fees occasionally, students do not see any tangible benefits. Students did notice the 'repainting of the school,' building 'nice shelters at the parking lot, so the mini coopers are shielded from the harsh weather conditions,' upgrading the 'toilet' just recently (i thought they are moving to new campus?)... there was no upgrading of facilities, and any improved provision of materials and tools for students. and the security situation has not improved (a laptop was stolen a couple of months ago from the fine arts studio)

Back to international students....
The school have International Students office, which 'serves' the international students monthly with, among others

1. Movie Screening
2. BBQ dinners
3. Field Trips

What did they treat locals with?

Not much.

It makes complete sense for me that the international students ought to receive extra special care from the school. Not only are these students paying more, these people have left their countries, left their friends and families to come to LaSalle to develop their artistic skills.

This may seem harsh, but if singaporeans to receive the same services that international students are getting, why not pay the same amount as us?

I am representing all international students of LaSalle who shares the same opinion as me on this matter. In my present university, all students (regardless local, or international) pays the same amount of money. Still, the international students receive more support from the school. This is because the school realises the difficulties these students have to face that most locals do not.

As much as I'm glad this blog is set up and I do agree with most of the opinions posted here, I have to disagree strongly with this one.

Think about it......

Well of course international students need more care as Emil has mentioned (above), but the question is why so big a difference? and why the fees are goin up higher and higher each year when the quality of the school remains at the same level?

and 70% international student?

I m a local subsidized student in LaSalle, meaning that the MOE pays the balanced amount that I m subsidized for as far as I know? I do not know the exact amount but the full amount MOE and I paid can near an amount to internationals students. I couldn’t agree more the international schools students are paying much higher fees and they are increasing the fees and international student’s rate? They not going to educate local students anymore? We also pay the school around the amount but not that high as the international schools. I never attended activities mentioned there. Because we pay slightly lower?

I have to agree with Emil.

International student pay more and they face more difficulties - it's only natural that there are a few activities intended to make international student feel more on ease. And hey, it's not even a lot. I can only recall 1 international student party and 1 outing during my diploma study. The movie screening are open for local students as well. And I see a lot of local student storming in to join the international student party after their class to get free meal.

Of course, it doesn't help that quite a number of local students look down on foreign students from certain country. ( I'm not talking about students from Australia, but more of those students from China for an instance ) I'm not saying that ALL local student is like that, but there are a lot of them around.
